Subclass 890:

Business Owner Visa

Subclass 890 visa is for people who already own and/or manage a business in Australia. It allows the holder to remain in Australia for an indefinite period of time. To apply as a primary applicant, you must first hold one of the qualifying visas to be eligible to apply.


Transitory Phase

It is important to note this is a transitory visa which is no longer widely used by people with the same or similar credentials, because the qualifying visas have been repealed.



The primary applicant must be in Australia at the time they apply for this, whilst the secondary applicants may be in or outside Australia. Other eligibility criteria include:


  • Residence:

The primary visa applicant must have lived in Australia as the holder of an eligible visa for a total period of at least 1 year in the 2 years immediately before the application is submitted. The 1 year period does not have to be continuous.


  • Ownership:

The primary applicant must have a continuous ownership interest in at least one ‘main’ business in Australia over the last 2 years.


  • Management:

The main business must have a registered ABN and have submitted Business Activity Statements to the ATO for all requisite periods.


  • Business Assets:

The main business must have a net accumulated value of $100,000 in assets throughout the last 12 months.


  • Business Turnover:

The main business must have an accumulated value of $300,000 in turnover in the last 12 months.


  • Employees:

The main business must employ the equivalent of 2 full-time employees in the last 12 months who are Australian citizens, permanent residents or NZ passport holders.


  • Total Assets:

The main business and personal assets must have a total value of $250,000 in the last 12 months.


  • Business Practices:

The primary applicant must have no history of unacceptable business activities.


Public Interest Criteria

4001, 4002, 4003, 4004, 4009, 4010, 4017, 4018, 4019, 4020 and 4021.


Visa Conditions

Condition 8515: The holder of the visa must not marry or enter into a de facto relationship before entering Australia.


Application Charges

Applications charges are payable in 2 instalments.

First instalment:

  • Base application charge: $2,450

  • Additional applicant charge for an applicant who is at least 18: $1,225

  • Additional applicant charge for an applicant who is less than 18: $615


Second instalment:

  • Additional applicants who do not demonstrate functional English: $4,890
