Maritime Crew Visa

Maritime crew visas are for individuals who are serving as crew members of non-military ships entering into Australia. This visa allows them to enter Australia and work as a crew member until their vessel departs.

Application Charges

This visa has no application charge associated with it.

Circumstances at the Time of Application – Primary Applicant

Applicants must be outside Australia when applying for this visa.
Applicants must either:
  • Be a member of crew of a non-military ship; or
  • Have received an offer to be a member of crew of a non-military ship by the ship’s master, owner, agent, charterer, operator; and
    • The offer is current; and
    • They would be a member of crew of a non-military ship if they sign on to the ship.
The non-military ship must not be a ship that is being imported into Australia.

Circumstances at the Time of Decision

Applicants must be outside of Australia at the time of decision. Applicants must continue to be either:
  • Be a member of crew of a non-military ship; or
  • Have received an offer to be a member of crew of a non-military ship by the ship’s master, owner, agent, charterer, operator; and
    • The offer is current; and
    • They would be a member of crew of a non-military ship if they sign on to the ship.
Applicants must have a genuine intention to enter Australia as crew members.

Relevant Special Return Criteria:

5001 and 5002

Visa Conditions

Mandatory Condition

8113: The holder must not work in Australia otherwise than as a member of the crew of a non-military ship.

Discretionary Condition

8101: The holder must not engage in work in Australia.
